Know your NHS number
Your NHS number is unique to you and can help make your care safer.
If you are registered with a GP practice, you will find your 10 digit NHS number on your NHS medical card. It’s fine if you still have the older style number, which has numbers and letters.
Why is the NHS Number important to everyone?
Using the NHS Number to identify you correctly is an important step towards improving the safety of your healthcare. If you know your NHS Number, you can help healthcare staff find your records more easily and share them safely with other people who are caring for you. As an added safety measure you can start checking the things the NHS sends you to make sure they have the right NHS Number and the information relates to you.
So know your NHS number and keep it in a safe place.
You can find your NHS number from your GP practice or by asking our PALS service (Telephone: 01234 897211) to look it up.
