The importance of a healthy and varied diet
A balanced diet is important for good health. A well balanced and varied diet can help to maintain a healthy body weight, enhance general well being and reduce the risk of a number of conditions including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis.


What is a balanced meal?
A healthy, well balanced diet is one which is based on the ‘Eatwell Plate’ model.

A healthy balanced diet contains a variety of foods including plenty of fruit and vegetables, plenty of starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice, some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and lentils and some dairy foods. It should also be low in fat (especially saturated fat), salt and sugar.
