Recently there have been some big changes to the way that people can get dental treatment on the NHS.
Now, any treatments that your dentist feels you need to keep your teeth, gums and mouth healthy can be given to you on the NHS. These treatments include dentures, crowns and bridges.
You no longer need to register with a dentist to get regular treatment. Simply contact a practice offering NHS dentistry and ask if you can have an appointment.
Call 0800 032 3026 if you have any questions about having dental treatment on the NHS in Bedfordshire, including questions on emergency dental advice.
(Calls charged at local rates. Mobile charges may vary)
Do I have to pay?
Even though your treatment will be on the NHS there are some charges that apply to most people.
The charge you pay depends on the treatment you need to keep your teeth and gums healthy. What you pay will be for a full course of treatment, not the individual items. You will only have to pay one charge for each course of treatment – even if you need to visit your dentist more than once to finish the treatment.
For more information on charges, call 0800 032 3026.
How much do I need to pay?
Your dentist should always tell you how much you need to pay before starting any treatment. You should be given a written statement detailing the treatment needed and the costs. If you are not offered a written statement of costs before treatment starts, you should ask for one.
There are three costs for NHS dental treatment.
Band 1: £17.00
This covers examination, diagnosis (eg X-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems and a scale and polish if needed. This is also the charge for urgent treatment when you need to see a dentist immediately.
Band 2: £47.00
This covers everything listed in Band 1, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work or if your dentist needs to take out one or more of your teeth.
Band 3: £204.00
This covers everything listed in Bands 1 and 2, plus crowns, dentures or bridges.
